Although Ideal for their 1980s Lifestyle, their Home Needed Refocusing for the 2020s.
This beloved home, built in 1987, has been central to the owners’ close-knit family for over three-and-a-half decades. After weighing the financial and emotional costs of giving up their living situation and neighborhood, the empty nesters decided that staying in place would be the wisest course. However, the property required major refocusing to support their multifaceted, evolving lifestyle.
As it stood, the house didn’t flow well and was relatively compartmentalized and dark. Some past remodeling projects performed by other builders—an added porch, kitchen re-do, and basement finishing—were, frankly, not that well-designed, contributing to the sense of congestion. Since MasterWerks had handled some major repairs for the couple, as well as projects at each of their married children’s homes, they entrusted us with the planning, coordination, and renovations. We took a comprehensive approach, with RDS Architects and Hue Interiors providing able assistance in the effort.
The overall goal was to create a truly inviting space where the couple could entertain their extensive social, civic, and business connections, while providing greater ease and livability whenever younger family members visited. Simultaneously, the home had to deliver convenience and functionality conducive to remaining in place in later years.
Over the course of a complex planning process, we decided to reconfigure the main floor layout in a manner that would eliminate existing deficiencies, improve overall lighting and window placement, and create more space on both the main and upper levels by building an addition that would include a dedicated golf simulator room. Once we were certain that the structural plan delivered the necessary flow, we went to work on the finishes, supporting the owners’ desire for a high degree of detail and finesse.
Their refocused home is now transformed: flowing, elegant, and fully coordinated. The light-filled dining room and kitchen with walk-through pantry are updated with A+ appliances. The addition’s main level features the state-of-the-art golf simulator room, catering to the cluster of avid golfers in the family and alternatively providing space for the grandchildren’s games, as well as an expanded mudroom, powder room, and first-floor laundry. We also upgraded the existing garage with custom cabinetry and storage facilities to pamper the owners’ vehicles.
The upper level of the addition made it possible to design a much more luxurious master bedroom/sitting room, bath, and laundry suite, optimizing space and functionality. And of course, the flowing plan incorporates wider doorways and other quiet accommodations intended to add comfort and safety to later years.
Throughout construction, the owners were able to remain in residence as we coordinated the work with care and flexibility, accommodating their needs and pets. Although this refocusing project was far from a simple remodel—transformation would be a more accurate description—it is the last one the couple plans to do. They now have the satisfaction of living in their forever home that truly mirrors their wishes and needs, without the financial or emotional impact of moving.
